THE THREE NECESSITIES
There is a lot of fear abroad just now, I'm thinking most of us feel it. Big disasters have shaken a lot of people this year, the tsunami, earthquakes, hurricanes and typhoons, wars and the threat of wars, and terrorist attacks. People wonder how to protect themselves, and they take a closer look at what's important and what's not.
I believe it's important to take care of one's safety and that of one's loved ones, and to help those who need help. When I was growing up, some of the time we lived in the country and had a garden that provided much of our food. My parents canned and later froze a large amount of food each summer and fall.
After I was grown up, I noticed they still did that, preserving much more than they'd need for the year. I asked my father why they planted such a big garden when only the two of them were there to eat it, and why they put by so much food. He said, it was because when he was growing up they never knew if there would be a crop that year or if there would be a crop failure. He said, "We had to prepare for the possibility that we'd have to eat for two years what we could produce in one, and we might need to share with other family members or neighbors."
I thought that was a wise thing to do, learned by my ancestors from long, long ago when there were no supermarkets, no charities, and sometimes great disasters with very little help from outside.
So, I think it's the intelligent and wise thing to do to prepare enough of everything one can to have abundant reserves. Always have plenty of what's needed, or could be needed.
But, beyond that, after the reserves are provided, and while they are being produced and arranged for too, as a daily thing--what is needed, besides those physical and substance reserves?
I don't remember where I read this, but it rings true to me. Everyone has need of the following necessities, every day:
1. Something/someone to love
2. Something to do
3. Something to look forward to
Make sure these are there for you. Love is so important that every life needs it like we need air and water. If you don't have it, go where it may be found. Seek it out, give it to those who will receive it without harm to you or to them.
Work is a great healer. Work hard. When you don't know what to do, just work. And make sure and rest afterward. Work clears the carbon out of one's personal engine.
And, always have something satisfying, refreshing, enjoyable to look forward to, every day, several times a day, every week, every month, every year, and on and on.
As we go into the heaviest activity and stress laden part of the year, remember to add resources, abundant resources, and, alongside that, the three necessities.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~question/answer~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: I find that sleep is the place I cheat myself the most. I rarely get eight hours. Is that really a problem?
A: Evidently you aren't exceptional about the sleep thing. Americans, particularly, seem to be sleep deprived. It was popular a few years ago to advise people to get up a half hour or hour earlier than usual to fit in benefits and activities that one wanted to add to one's everyday experience--things like exercise, meditation, reading, writing, having a leisurely breakfast, etc. There were whole books written about how to do that, cheat oneself of sleep (wasn't really important anyway, just a habit) to add more time to do more.
But, there has been a shift away from that viewpoint, research is showing that sleep is much more important than may people thought. Sleep, in fact, is way up the scale in the top ten things we need in abundance to be healthy and happy human beings. So, don't cheat yourself there. Make the changes you need to to get as much sleep as your body needs. And it varies from person to person as to how much that is.
Experiment with your bedtime and wakeup time to see how long you would sleep without any alarm to wake you, and when the time is that your body wants to rest. Learn to co-operate with yourself about sleeping, not fight your natural rhythms.
Make sleeping a priority, not something you do because you have to. Notice the difference it makes.
